Lost is a self portrait I drew, representative of the emotions I was experiencing at the time. I continued to struggle with feelings of loneliness and depression despite being surrounded by amazing people. If you want more context to the original piece it is towards the top of the gallery.

I wanted to revisit this self-portrait and walk the viewer through a story that explains a simplified version of what I felt I was experiencing. Because this is such a heavy topic but also something that a lot of people in Gen Z go through, I wanted to make the story easily accessible through a more approachable medium and my comic book class presented the perfect opportunity.

There are two possible ways that I wanted the comic book to be experienced. One, as a short story that people feel they can relate to and start conversations about their mental health struggles and journey. Something that is approachable by children as well as adults. Secondly, I want people to be able to dive deeper into the meaning behind some of the intentionality of the characters and color representation. Everything that I did character and color wise has a meaning behind it that points to where I get my hope from through all of this.

Readers can either take the story at face value, making their own interpretations (which is what art is for, exploring!) or they are welcome to dive deeper into the story and follow along with my thought process.

Click on the pictures below to take a closer look at the process and to read the comic book. Continue reading below to gain some insight on the hidden meanings and the story behind the comic.
